Deputy Fuzz is one of the Prairie People and a trusted deputy of Marshal BraveStarr, serving alongside Thirty/Thirty, Judge J.B. McBride and Handlebar. He is BraveStarr's "li'l partner", the first Prairie Person to befriend humans and the only member of his species to take a formal job in law enforcement.
Character background[]
Fuzz is a pudgy, prairie dog like alien from the native Prairie People of New Texas. He lives and works around Fort Kerium, where he signs on as BraveStarr's deputy and quickly becomes part of the core team that protects settlers and natives alike. Among the Prairie People, Fuzz was one of the first to look past old grievances and actively seek friendship with the human colonists. That choice leads him into law enforcement as BraveStarr's assistant, making him a bridge between the underground Prairie People settlements and the surface town of Fort Kerium. Flashbacks in BraveStarr: The Legend show that Fuzz is older than he looks. As a younger Prairie Person he was among those forced to work when his cousin Scuzz made a deal with prospector Tex Hex to exploit Prairie People labor. Fuzz pitied Tex's human partner Angus McBride, trying to free him and recovering the holographic message from McBride's young daughter J.B. that he kept for decades. He was unable to prevent Angus' injury when the cliff collapsed, but he did witness the arrival of Shaman, who saved Angus and helped set events in motion that would later bring BraveStarr to New Texas. Years later, when J.B. has become Judge J.B. McBride, Fuzz is still in possession of the holo recording and now serves openly as deputy in Fort Kerium. He often rides into action in his custom Prairie Rocket or on a Turbo-Mule, using his lasso and digging skills to back up BraveStarr, Thirty/Thirty and J.B. on patrols, hostage rescues and disputes between miners and Prairie People.
Personality[]
Fuzz is friendly, sociable and diligent. Other characters sometimes treat him as comic relief, but his basic nature is responsible and even tempered. He is determined to perform his duty as a deputy properly, whether that means standing guard in town, racing into the Badlands or facing down much larger outlaws with only his rope and his courage. Like many Prairie People he speaks in broken, slightly squeaky English, which gives some of his lines a humorous twist. BraveStarr affectionately calls him "l'il partner". Fuzz idolises BraveStarr and wants to live up to his example, but he is not afraid to be saddened or confused when humans insult his people, as seen when prospectors throw slurs like "critters" and "fuzz heads" at the Prairie People in Kerium Fever. Fuzz is typically nervous about open violence and prefers to use his rope or his wits before reaching for heavier firepower. Even when he makes mistakes, such as being tricked into freeing Dingo Dan in Shake Hands with Long Arm John, he stubbornly tries to put things right and prove that he can still be trusted as a lawman.
Powers and abilities[]
High speed digging – Like all Prairie People, Fuzz is an exceptional digger who can move through soil and rock far faster than human miners, popping up from underground to scout, escape or surprise an enemy. Roping and lasso work – Fuzz is an expert with his multi rope, using it to snare outlaws by the legs, tie up Prairie People like Scuzz into tight bundles, and capture entire gangs once BraveStarr has disarmed them. Mechanical aptitude – Fuzz shares the Prairie People knack for machines, able to build and repair gadgets and vehicles far out of proportion to his size. He keeps BraveStarr's hover equipment ready, maintains his own Prairie Rocket and can improvise small devices when needed. Piloting – He is an agile pilot of the Prairie Rocket and other small craft, patrolling the Badlands and chasing raiders across New Texas. Voice disguise – Some sources note that Fuzz can mimic voices and disguise his own when necessary, adding a small espionage edge to his usual support role.
Equipment[]
Prairie Rocket – Fuzz's personal one being flyer, used for patrol and rapid response. The craft carries light weaponry and lets him make up for his short legs in the wide New Texas desert. Multi rope lasso – A versatile rope that Fuzz uses both as a weapon and a tool, allowing him to bind criminals, rescue civilians and perform acrobatic swings. Deputy's badge and gear – As an official deputy he wears a badge and sometimes carries standard Neutra lasers or other Fort Kerium equipment, although he usually relies on his rope and digging skills rather than heavy weapons.
Relationships[]
Marshal BraveStarr – Fuzz's boss, friend and hero. Fuzz looks up to BraveStarr and tries to follow his example, acting as his "l'il partner" in investigations and showdowns. BraveStarr in turn trusts Fuzz with real responsibility and defends him when others, such as Mayor Derringer, underestimate him. Thirty/Thirty – Although they have very different temperaments, Fuzz and Thirty/Thirty fight side by side in many battles. Thirty/Thirty often acts as Fuzz's muscle and protector in dangerous situations, while Fuzz sometimes acts as a small, sensible counterweight to Thirty/Thirty's love of stomping and blasting. Judge J.B. McBride – Fuzz respects J.B. both as Angus' daughter from the holo recording he kept and as the judge whose rulings he helps enforce. He is especially bothered when prejudice or misunderstandings put her at odds with the Prairie People. Outlaw Scuzz – Fuzz's cousin and near opposite, a criminal Prairie Person who works with Tex Hex and the Carrion Bunch. Stories like Skuzz and Fuzz focus on their family tension when Scuzz threatens to betray the Prairie People settlement.
Behind the scenes[]
Deputy Fuzz is voiced primarily by Charlie Adler, who also voices Tex Hex and other characters in the series. In two episodes, No Drums, No Trumpets and Strength of the Bear, the role is performed by Susan Blu. Later commentary on the series has often singled Fuzz out as the most exaggerated comic relief character. A retrospective review on Den of Geek describes him, not entirely kindly, as a small, shrill comic misfit and likens him to some of the more divisive comedy sidekicks in other media. Merchandise for the series included a Deputy Fuzz action figure and accessories released as part of Mattel's BraveStarr toy line in the late 1980s, with the character appearing on packaging and promotional material.
